As NPC (Non-Player Character) are all creatures or characters called, which are not played by Players. These inhabit in large numbers, the Freewar World.
Most of them are exist to be killed in order to get EP, Gold and possibly Dropitems too. Some NPCs also play a role in Quests.
Has a NPC been killed it respawns after a while and can again be attacked and killed.
You can find NPCs with totally different attack powers, ranging from Shadow Weasels or Hares, which can be easily killed by a beginner without loosing no more than a Life Point, to the Old Grotto Snake, for which you should have a few hundred thousand EPs.
Since 21 October 2006 some of the NPCs have got their own image.

NPC-Species
NPCs are not identical to each other. There are three different groups of NPCs.
Normal NPC
The normal NPC is plainest form of NPCs. Usually they do have very little Life Points and also very little Attack Power, but they mostly drop a nice amount of gold coins. Best known NPCs of this type are the Old Man, the Silver Fox or the Spirit of Pur Pur.
You can only have fights to death with this kind of NPCs.
Unique-NPCs
A far more powerful type of NPCs is the Unique-NPC. Since these can only be strike by single strokes and they have a much higher attack power as well as a much higher number of Life Points, it is advisable to fight them in a party, plus to weaken it by using ranged weapons in the first place. Furthermore there can never exist two identical Unique-NPCs worldwide. The only exception is the Tower Spirit, which can exists several times.
Many Unique-NPCs can move independently or defend themselves by incapacitating the player, poisoning him, etc.
Party-NPCs
The latest, but the most persistent generation of NPCs are the Party-NPCs. They call very high attack powers and huge numbers of Life Points their own. These NPC's can only be harmed when killing them in a party. Some of them are even immune to ranged weapons. Just as the Unique-NPCs do, Party-NPCs are able to move independently or defend themselves.
However, it is mostly worth the trouble of killing one of those NPCs, since they might drop a desired amulet.
EP-Output of NPCs
The output of EP in the case of a victory in a fight against a NPC ranges from 0 EP, e.g. when killing the Jerodar Apprentice, to as much as 20 EP, when killing the Water Wraith. You will not get any EP when your amount of EPs is five times hight then your Academy-Limit and you can call least 5000 EP your own.
Gold from NPCs
Each NPCs drops after its death a certain amount of golds, which ranged from 0 Gold Coins (e.g. Rattlesnake) up to 200 Gold Coins (e.g. Father of Spineshot Hedgehogs). By learning the skill Plundering these amounts can be increased. The amount dropped by the NPC you are about to kill increases automatically, if the NPC is not killed for a certain period of time. In doing so a NPC can accumulate an amount of gold as high as 10.000 Gold Coins, if it was not killed for a month or so. There is a bonus of 500 Gold Coins rewarded as soon as the NPC was not killed for a day. This so-called golddropbonus is actually nothing more than "accumulated funds" of this NPC. However, some NPCs are excluded of this goldropbonus (have a look at).
How to
shrink NPCs
NPCs can be found by using a Unified Soul Capsule, a Great Soul Capsule or normal Soul Capsules, a Soul Sphere, Visions of the Mindless, a Soul Pyramid or simply by walking around a looking for them.
evoke NPCs
NPCs can be evoked by using a Lesser Summoning of the Mindless or a normal Summoning of the Mindless, a Resurrection Mist, a Greater Resurrection Mist, a Global Resurrection Spell, Beautiful Weather, Local Resurrection Spell, Greater Local Resurrection Spell, Summoning Spell of Pironians or the Skill Hunting.
shrink NPCs
NPCs can be shrunken by using a Shrinking Spell. By doing so they will turn into magical items, which will last as long as 7 days. Their durability can be extended once by using a Wand of Magic or a Wand of Greater Magic. In addition, their durability can extendend by feeding them with Pet Food or feeding them at the The Feeding Trough in the Valley of Ruins, which provides again a durability of 7 days. You can feed your little pet as often as you want and you are yet again able to extend its durability by using a Wand of Magic or a Wand of Greater Magic. The shrinkage is either used to sell the shrunken NPC at the Slaughterhouse or for the fulfillment of a quest. Nevertheless, some players might just shrink a NPC to keep it as a pet.
NPCs and quests
Concerning the freewar worlds NPCs can play different roles. For some quests you only need to bring a few items to them in order to fulfill this quest. For other quests it is required to shrink that concerning NPC or to use a certain item to be able to make it move to a specific place. Plus, there are also NPCs, which can only be defeated by completing a quest in the first place, e.g. the Stone Colossus.
Location of NPCs
Almost all of the NPCs respawn at a ceratin place. Exceptations are some of the Unique- and Party-NPCs as well as a few of the normal NPCs. Those affected Unique- and Party-NPCs are able to move on their own, which is the reason why they do not have to be necessarily in a certain area all the time. Those few NPCs, who do not have their own place to respawn, are respawning on accident somewhere on the surface.
